Hello Allergicos! Sorry for the hiatus but University commitments and Christmas took over my schedule. However I'm back with part 1 of my "Best of 2018" about my journey over to Berlin. I've always wanted to visit this city because of the strong food scene I kept hearing about. So sit back and enjoy the read peeps!

On my first full day in Berlin, I was keen to sample some of the foods which Germany is famous for. The first two foods on my list: quark and currywurst! After visiting the brilliant German Spy Museum, a hidden gem which I would extremely reccomend visiting, I stumbled into the Mall of Berlin.
Now, food courts in Malls can be a bit hit-and-miss, but the Mall of Berlin's food court was truly a wondrous sight. I was immediately drawn to the currywurst stand, brightly-lit and smelling amazing.
Unsurprisingly the currywurst I bought didn't last long! My favourite part of it was the curry sauce, it had an excellent blend of spices and allowed the flavour of the curry and the sausage to co-exist. In fact the only annoying thing was that they don't sell more of these in the UK. I mean it is PERFECT for the UK market.

Next up, quark! No, not the little subatomic particles, I mean the German cheese product that acts more like yoghurt. That probably explains why, in a true case of ingenuity on the part of the Berliners, they have transformed it into frozen quark.
After looking through the multitude of flavour options, I chose a hazelnut quark with cherry compote, Oreo-flavoured quark, chocolate pieces and vegan cookie dough. It was quite a lot but for that price, it was excellent value for money. Taste-wise, it was sublime. If they bring frozen quark to the UK I will be a frequent consumer!

Nestled into the Berlin Hauptbahnhof station is a charming burger restaurant called Hans im Glück which is a must-visit if you find yourself in the area. The staff were super helpful with my allergies, finding all the information I need quickly and efficiently. I ordered the chicken burger and fries deal which gave me a cocktail for a very good price. The burger was so nice and filling and the fries were some of the best I've ever eaten. It was so nice to be able to eat a burger whilst feeling totally relaxed because I knew I would be safe eating it.

Now I ordered the Nutcracker drink, which is made out of Frangelico, mint, lime, sugar & soda. Initially I was very skeptical as I've normally only had Frangelico as an aperitif but this drink blew me away. It was surprisingly fresh and light and not too strong and a nice take on the mojito-style line of drinks. Would definitely recommend this. As well as the drinks and burger deal, they did also offer a soft-drink deal which was equally good.

As you can see, the food scene in Berlin was truly marvellous and I just want to highlight something else that I really liked about the city. Wherever we went there was an abundance of fruit and herbal teas! Now if you know me you'll know I'm a big fan of teas and infusions so all this exciting variety was the source of a lot of enjoyment for me. All in all between the food and the culture in Berlin I had a wonderful time and definitely want to return.
Keep your eyes peeled for part 2 of my "Best of 2018" selection and I'll see you later with even more exciting things planned for 2019!!!!
