Allergico Reviews: Other Foods snacks

Writer: Sophie WallaceSophie Wallace

Allergicos, it's fair to say this week's snack selection proved interesting. Other Foods' snacks are dried versions of various different vegetables and fungi, this in turn preserves the nutrients within the snack and with only a little salt added, makes them relatively healthy too.

First up were the okra snacks, anyone with knowledge of Indian cooking will immediately recognise this staple vegetable which is stacked full of vitamins. Personally however, I didn't think it quite worked as a snack, as I felt the texture was a little strange and the aftertaste wasn't my favourite so I wasn't able to finish the packet. I was, however, sharing them with my mother who was a bigger fan than me so they're very much an acquired taste.

Next was the oyster mushrooms which I enjoyed much more flavour-wise as I'm a big fan of the umami flavour many edible fungi have. These were very good, although the texture was unusual, I definitely recommend these as an interesting alternative to the usual crisps.

Finally, the shiitake mushrooms were the most interesting of them all as whilst again I wasn't a big fan of the texture, the flavour delivered a powerful and rich umami hit which I loved.

Overall these snacks for me had definite plus points and definite minuses so whilst I wasn't 100% a fan, I'd definitely recommend checking them out for something a bit different.

They're available from TheVeganKind supermarket at £2.55 a packet.
