Capital Nosh pt 4: What in the Wholefoods?!

Writer: Sophie WallaceSophie Wallace

London prices, higher than the Shard and just as spikey. I had to work over my lunch-break today so the minute I was done I dashed outside to see what food I could get. Wanting a change from the local M&S, I went wandering and saw a sign I recognised. Now I'll admit I didn't even know Wholefoods were a thing outside the UK but I was curious so I wandered in and my goodness I'm glad I did!

Having never been to a place like this before, I had no idea what to expect but the minute I walked in I was amazed! There was so much on offer, I had to really concentrate to avoid buying everything in sight. But the sight of a sign offering vegan doughnuts with interesting flavours was too much to resist. With my unusual tastes, I went for the Lemon Beetroot Thyme doughnut because it had a lot of things I like in and I was interested in how the thyme would work in dessert form (I had once put it in meringues which worked great so I was optimistic).

What with my egg allergy, I'm a bit of a doughnut novice but I have to say this one was amazing! The thyme in the icing mixed perfectly with the lemon and beetroot for a sweet and sticky doughnut, even if the price was harder to swallow.

I just want to take the time to reassure you that I didn't just sit around eating doughnuts, I looked for a proper sandwich too. The first one that caught my eye was the Vegan Smoky TTLA Sandwich and in particular, the vegan mayonnaise as that is like gold dust to someone like me.

Now this sandwich was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The vegenaise was really tasty and all together it was a decent sandwich. However, the meat substitute tasted funny and I didn't like the texture, the bread was also really close textured which I wasn't keen on. I always say the best food is the stuff you eat with relatively little effort. After finishing that sandwich I felt like I'd run a marathon. Whilst I am going back to Wholefoods, that sandwich will not be on my shopping list.

As this branch is right by my office, I decided to explore the curious neon sign advertising a noodle bar in the upstairs part of the building. My experience was interesting to say the least and as such is getting its own blog post so watch this space!
